Interesting facts

Audio Earth renders the planet itself — oceans, clouds, and city lights — as a controllable, audio-reactive instrument rather than a scientifically precise simulation of any single dataset.

  • A day is shorter than 24 hours. Earth's true rotation relative to the distant stars, a sidereal day, takes about 23 hours 56 minutes; the familiar 24-hour day is measured against the Sun and is slightly longer because Earth also moves along its orbit while it spins.
  • Ocean dominates the surface. Water covers roughly 70% of Earth's surface, making the oceans the single largest feature visible from space.
  • Clouds cover most of the planet at any moment. NASA satellite observations show clouds blanket around two-thirds of Earth's surface at any given time, with oceans staying cloudier on average than land.
  • City lights map humanity from orbit. NASA's Black Marble composites, built from the VIIRS day-night band on the Suomi NPP satellite, are sensitive enough to pick out individual cities, and researchers note nothing traces the spread of human settlement as clearly as nighttime lights.

Quick start

  1. Start the demo track, choose a local audio file, or enable a live input.
  2. Try a preset or style first, then open the section for the part of the image you want to change.
  3. On a control with Assign modulation, open the source picker, choose a signal, and watch the slider's live fill.
  4. Use Reset to Defaults whenever you want to return to the original look.

Audio modulation

On a control with Assign modulation, select the activity icon to open Modulate with. Choose a named source, or choose — None to leave the control unmodulated. After you assign one, its name appears below the slider; select that name to edit the route, or use Clear modulation to remove it. The slider track shows the live signal reaching the control.

Tips for a better audio visualization

  • Use bass for the largest orbital or camera motion and highs for stars, sparks, or glow accents.
  • Try assigning Bass to Spin Speed, then compare Mid, High, and Volume while the demo track plays. The slider's live fill shows the signal reaching that control.
