Our solar system is eight planets, a handful of dwarf planets, and an enormous amount of empty space, all held in orbit by the Sun's gravity. BeamTracer's orbital simulator lets you exaggerate tilt, ring size, and orbit direction for visual effect — it is a playable diagram, not a to-scale model of the real thing.
Eight planets, two families. In order from the Sun — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune — the first four are rocky worlds with solid surfaces, while the outer four are gas or ice giants built around a core, with no solid surface to stand on.
Space is far emptier than diagrams suggest. Fitting both true planet sizes and true distances into one physical model is so extreme that a scale attempt has to spread itself across half a mile or more just to show the gaps honestly.
Saturn's rings are almost paper-thin. Despite spanning up to about 175,000 miles outward from the planet, the main rings are typically only around 30 feet thick, made of countless chunks of water ice ranging from sand-grain size to mountain size.
Axial tilt is why we have seasons. Earth's roughly 23-degree tilt toward or away from the Sun drives our seasons; Uranus takes this to an extreme with a tilt of nearly 98 degrees, meaning each pole gets about 21 unbroken years of daylight followed by 21 years of darkness.
Two planets spin the "wrong" way. Venus and Uranus both rotate opposite to most of the solar system — Venus so slowly that its day is longer than its year, and Uranus effectively rolling around the Sun on its side.
These details are summarized from NASA Science's "Planet Sizes and Locations in Our Solar System" , NASA Science's Saturn facts page , and NASA Science's Uranus facts page .
