Ridge Lines

Over a hundred thin lines stacked edge to edge, tracing a flowing dune field that swells with the bass, ripples with the waveform and can be plucked by hand.

Ridge Lines is a monochrome line composition in the Lines category. Over a hundred thin, evenly spaced lines fill the frame from edge to edge, each one a slice through a field of flowing dunes seen in perspective. The lines bend where the ground swells, crowd together where it turns away, and disappear behind each crest, so dark gaps open behind every ridge. The bass lifts the big dune, the mids raise smaller ridges, beat crests run across the lines, and the live waveform rides along every line, newest sound nearest you rolling back into the distance. Ridge Lines requires WebGPU; see Browser Support for current platform details.

Plucking the lines

Mono Dune with the demo track · drag up, then let go

Drag on the canvas with the left mouse button to grab the lines under the pointer and pull them up or down. Let go and they spring back, sending a crest running out to both sides from where you released them, the same crest the music launches on a beat.

Presets

Mono Dune is the signature look: white lines on black over one big flowing dune. Neon colors the lines from magenta near you to cyan in the distance and sends crests from both ends. Paper inverts the picture into dark ink on white. Storm packs in two hundred finer lines over taller, faster ridges that answer every beat. Ember drops the camera low over wide dunes toward the horizon, and Topo looks down from above like a contour map.

Quick start

  1. Start the demo track, choose a local audio file, or enable a live input.
  2. Try a preset or style first, then open the section for the part of the image you want to change.
  3. On a control with Assign modulation, open the source picker, choose a signal, and watch the slider's live fill.
  4. Use Reset to Defaults whenever you want to return to the original look.

Audio modulation

On a control with Assign modulation, select the activity icon to open Modulate with. Choose a named source, or choose — None to leave the control unmodulated. After you assign one, its name appears below the slider; select that name to edit the route, or use Clear modulation to remove it. The slider track shows the live signal reaching the control.

Modulated controlSectionWhat the route changes
Line WidthLinesSets how thick each line is drawn, from hairline to bold.
GlowLinesAdds a soft halo around every line; 0 keeps the lines razor sharp.
HeightTerrainScales how tall the whole surface rises; 0 lays every line flat.
DuneTerrainSets the height of the big flowing dune; by default the bass lifts it further.
RidgesTerrainAdds smaller ridges across the surface; by default the mids raise them.
Dune SizeTerrainSets how wide the dunes and ridges are; lower values pack more of them into view.
Wave SpeedTerrainSets how fast the dunes flow and reshape; 0 holds the terrain still.
Pulse StrengthPulsesSets how high each beat crest lifts the lines as it travels; 0 turns the crests off.
Waveform RipplePulsesCarries the live waveform along every line, with the newest sound nearest you rolling back into the distance.
Camera AngleCameraTilts the view from a low glance across the dunes to looking straight down on them.
PerspectiveCameraSets the field of view; higher values exaggerate depth so near lines spread and far lines crowd together.

Lines

SettingAvailable valuesWhat it changes
Lines40–240Sets how many lines stack from the bottom of the screen to the top; more lines give a denser, finer surface.
Line Width0.4px–4pxSets how thick each line is drawn, from hairline to bold. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Glow0–2Adds a soft halo around every line; 0 keeps the lines razor sharp. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.

Terrain

SettingAvailable valuesWhat it changes
Height0–3Scales how tall the whole surface rises; 0 lays every line flat. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Dune0–2.5Sets the height of the big flowing dune; by default the bass lifts it further. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Ridges0–2Adds smaller ridges across the surface; by default the mids raise them. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Dune Size0.4–2.5Sets how wide the dunes and ridges are; lower values pack more of them into view. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Wave Speed0–2Sets how fast the dunes flow and reshape; 0 holds the terrain still. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.

Color

SettingAvailable valuesWhat it changes
Color ModeMONO, NEON, EMBER, ICE, AURORAChooses the line colors: plain mono, or a palette that shifts from near lines to far ones.
InvertOn / OffDraws dark lines on a white background instead of light lines on black.

Pulses

SettingAvailable valuesWhat it changes
Pulse FromLEFT, MIDDLE, RIGHT, BOTHChooses where each beat crest starts before it runs across the lines.
Pulse Strength0–3Sets how high each beat crest lifts the lines as it travels; 0 turns the crests off. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.
Waveform Ripple0–3Carries the live waveform along every line, with the newest sound nearest you rolling back into the distance. Use Assign modulation to choose a source.

Audio

SettingAvailable valuesWhat it changes
Audio EnabledOn / OffTurns the reaction to sound on or off; off leaves the dunes drifting on their own.
Smoothing0.01–0.99Sets how smoothly the lines follow the music; higher values ease out quick jumps.
Master Gain0x–3xScales how strongly the whole picture reacts to the music.
Bass Intensity0x–3xScales every control routed to the bass.

Some controls appear only after you enable a related mode or style. The settings panel always reflects the options available for the current selection.

Tips for a better audio visualization

  • Give bass the larger structural motion and highs the fine detail or glow; the frequency split keeps the composition legible.
  • Try assigning Bass to Line Width, then compare Mid, High, and Volume while the demo track plays. The slider's live fill shows the signal reaching that control.
