How Do I Run Live Music Visuals During a DJ Set?

Run live DJ visuals in BeamTracer by feeding Viz from a browser tab, audio interface or routed audio device, then switching to Performer for presets, tempo and scene controls. Confirm the incoming signal before adjusting the look. Rehearse the display connection separately, and use a recorded track when you need a repeatable exported video.

Hi, I’m Trina with BeamTracer.com. During a set, you need two things to work reliably: the music must reach the visuals, and you must be able to change the picture without interrupting the music. Start with that small working setup. Add effects and controller mappings after you know the input and display behave.

How do I get DJ audio into the visualizer?

Choose the input that matches where the music actually plays. For a browser source, share the music tab with audio. For a physical mixer, use an audio interface input. For desktop DJ software, use a routed device where needed. A moving input meter is your first success check, before any preset or effect.

Don't connect an amplified speaker output to an interface input. Use the appropriate mixer output, cable and interface settings. The audio-input setup guide explains browser-tab capture and routed devices. Browser capture choices vary by browser and operating system; rehearse on the actual show computer.

  1. Open Viz and open Settings → Audio.
  2. Click CHANGE and choose TAB / SYSTEM AUDIO, MICROPHONE or VIRTUAL AUDIO DEVICE for your source.
  3. For tab audio, press CONTINUE, select the music tab, enable its audio sharing and grant capture permission. For a device, select the intended input.
  4. For an input device, press ENABLE INPUT where shown and start the music at its source.
  5. Confirm the live meter moves, then choose a visualizer and watch its response.
  6. For a repeatable MP4 or WebM export, load a recorded track instead of the live input and use RENDER → RENDER VIDEO.
Select the device that actually receives your music.

Grant microphone access before judging an empty device list. Confirm the incoming level after selecting the device; a device name alone doesn't prove the mixer is feeding it.

How do I switch looks without stopping the set?

Click PERFORMER in the Viz header. The selected audio setup remains active while the performance interface replaces the browsing sidebars. Use the preset grid to rehearse a few distinct looks, then add tempo, scenes or controller mappings only when each change has a clear purpose in the set.

Prepare a restrained look for quieter passages, a more energetic look for peaks, and one dependable fallback. Practice moving between them with the same music source. A preset that looks good on one loud passage may feel busy across an entire set.

The Scene Sequencer gives you scene controls and transitions. The tempo guide explains the central BPM button. Tempo and incoming audio serve different roles: setting a BPM doesn't prove your browser is receiving the mixer’s sound, and a reactive visual doesn't prove beat-perfect synchronization with a DJ deck.

How do I start with the rainbow spectrum look?

Choose SPECTRUM ANALYZER from CORE ANALYTICS, then select RAINBOW under COLORS → GRADIENT. Start the demo track to see the colored bands respond before connecting your own input. The palette changes the look; it does not change the incoming audio or prove a mixer connection.

See the Spectrum Analyzer guide for its view and reaction controls. Performer presets can recall their own settings, so check the selected look again after a preset change.

Can I play the visuals from a MIDI controller?

Performer supports MIDI controls and learned assignments. Start with one target and one knob or pad, then test the assignment during playback. Confirm the controller is visible to the browser and check the specific browser requirements in the MIDI integration guide before relying on the device at a venue.

For FX Rack controls, press LEARN, click the target slider or supported button, then move the controller. Don't map every available target at once. A short, practiced mapping is easier to recover when something changes during a set.

Rehearse the fallback

Test one manual preset change and your fallback look before adding MIDI. Keep a way to continue the show if the controller disconnects.

How do I fix visuals that barely move or stay too intense?

Check the incoming signal first, then adjust visual response. Settings → Processing provides GAIN, RESPONSE and a live MONITOR. These controls shape how the visuals react; they don't change the track's listening volume. Start near the defaults, change one setting and compare a quiet passage with a loud one.

Press A to open the Audio Analysis Engine when you need a clearer view of the incoming signal. That view can help separate a silent source from a visualizer setting that simply needs adjustment. It is useful during setup; it doesn't need to remain over the finished performance canvas.

Mute is not reaction gain

Lowering VOL or muting playback does not reduce the signal driving the visuals. Use GAIN or the active visualizer’s reaction controls when the picture responds too strongly.

How do I show the visuals on a second display?

Use Output stage → Projector window to mirror the live Viz canvas into a clean window on the same computer. The performance controls stay in the main app. Opening this software mirror proves that the stage reaches another window; placement, brightness and latency on a real display still need an on-site rehearsal.

  1. Keep the music source running in Viz.
  2. Click Output stage in the header, then choose Projector window.
  3. Click Open projector window and keep the main BeamTracer tab open and visible.
  4. Move the clean window to the intended display, granting window-management permission if your browser offers it.
  5. Click inside the output window to enter fullscreen and check the framing.
  6. For an MP4 or WebM file instead of a live window, use a recorded track with RENDER → RENDER VIDEO.

The output guide covers the local window and OBS alternatives. The software mirror is a separate rehearsal step; it doesn't certify a physical projector, wireless display latency or hardware mixer connection.

The Visualizer Bar also has Pop Out for compact multi-visualizer layouts. That is a different surface from the main canvas mirror. Choose the output that carries the picture you intend to show.

Can I turn the same look into a promotional video?

Yes, with a replayable track. Viz can render the current visualizer and loaded music to MP4 or WebM. For cover art, a title and lyrics, use BeamTracer Studio to build a video composition. A rendered clip is a fixed file; it won't keep reacting to a live set after export.

Read the Viz video-export guide before rendering. A live input doesn't provide the repeatable timeline an offline render needs. Record your mix in your normal audio workflow, load that recording, and check the result with Include Audio enabled when the soundtrack belongs in the export.

Can I try this before buying a plan?

Start with a browser rehearsal and a track you have permission to use. Check current plans for watermark, performance and export entitlements rather than assuming that a preview demonstration represents every account’s limits.

Open Viz, verify one input, then try three Performer presets. A small setup you can operate confidently is the useful starting point for a live set.
