Device Profiles

How to choose a device profile for scanner point-rate comparisons, and how profiles affect BeamTracer's analysis.

Device profiles give the ILDA Viewer a reference point rate for load percentages, point-budget messages, and the PPS graph. They do not measure the connected projector or certify a safe operating condition.

Available Profiles

Standard 30K

30,000 pps. This is BeamTracer's default comparison profile; confirm the manufacturer's stated test pattern and scan angle before treating it as your hardware's rating.

High Performance 60K

60,000 pps. Use it only when your scanner manufacturer specifies that rate for the relevant test condition.

Unlimited

200,000 pps — an expert/testing comparison profile that raises the load-warning thresholds. Use it to inspect dense files without the usual load coloring, not as a target for hardware.

Custom

User-defined pps limit. For unusual hardware or conservative limits.

Choosing the Right Profile

Check Your Hardware Specs

Your projector's scanner rating should be listed in its specifications. Common values are 20K, 25K, 30K, 40K, and 60K.

When in Doubt, Go Lower

Scanner ratings depend on the test pattern, scan angle, tuning, and operating conditions. If a specification omits those conditions, ask the manufacturer before choosing a profile.

Do not use BeamTracer's FPS control to find a projector's physical limit. The viewer changes the file's calculated demand but does not measure scanner response. Scanner adjustment can damage hardware when done incorrectly; follow the manufacturer's procedure or use a qualified laser-projector technician.

How Profiles Affect Analysis

The selected profile changes:

  • Scanner Load %: Calculated against the profile's max pps
  • Load Status: Color bands compare requested PPS with the profile rate
  • PPS Graph: Red zone threshold adjusts to profile

Custom Profile

Use custom profile when:

  • Your hardware has an unusual rating (e.g., 45K)
  • You want to enforce a conservative limit
  • You're testing content for specific target hardware
