If you've ever wanted to project vector artwork with a laser, you've probably hit the same wall everyone does: most laser software means a paid, Windows-only desktop install and hours of learning curve before your logo ever leaves the lens. The steps below are the shorter path, plus the checks worth doing before any file touches a real projector.

How do I convert an SVG file into an ILDA file?

Load your artwork into SVG to Laser in BT Laser Studio and it traces every SVG path into laser points, maps the SVG coordinates into ILDA coordinate space, and adds blanking between separate shapes. You adjust the trace, read the SAFETY CHECK panel, and click Download ILDA. No account is needed to convert and preview; a clean ILDA download asks you to sign in.

  1. Open SVG to Laser in Chrome or Edge — the studio is built and tested against them.
  2. Drag an SVG onto the canvas under SVG SOURCE, search ICON LIBRARY for one of 200,000+ Iconify icons, or pick a QUICK LOAD shape to test the pipeline.
  3. Set Simplify and Smooth curves under TRACE until the traced path still reads as your artwork.
  4. Switch on Show Point Density to see where points cluster and the scanner would slow down.
  5. Read the SAFETY CHECK panel and aim for a green scanner-load badge — under 70% of your selected device profile.
  6. Check OUTPUT STATS for the ILDA filename, format, frame count, and total points.
  7. Click Open in ILDA Viewer for the stress heat map, point classification, scanner path, and full safety report.
  8. Click Download ILDA to save the .ild file as ILDA Format 5 (2D True Color), or Send to Animation Studio to keep editing it as a layer.

Which ILDA format does the export produce?

Download ILDA always writes ILDA Format 5 (2D True Color) — full RGB per point, the modern default — named after your source file. There are no format or point-limit options on that button. If your hardware needs Format 0 or Format 1 output, or point reduction, open the file in the ILDA Viewer and convert it through the EXPORT ILDA dialog there.

Open exported ILDA files in compatible show software or a file player. A DAC connection alone does not mean that a device can read files; check its guide.

Is converting SVG to ILDA free?

Do I need to install anything?

Nothing. BT Laser Studio runs in a browser tab — use Chrome or Edge, because the studio is built and tested against them and live Helios output runs on WebUSB, which only Chromium-based browsers implement. Ether Dream and LaserCube go through the BeamTracer Bridge. That is the honest caveat up front: no Firefox, no Safari, and we would rather say so than let you find out at the venue.

What is an ILDA file?

ILDA (International Laser Display Association) is the standard file format for laser show content. It stores:

  • Point coordinates (X, Y positions for the beam)
  • Color data (RGB values at each point)
  • Blanking flags (when the beam should turn off between shapes)
  • Frame sequences (for animation)

There are several ILDA format variants (Format 0 through Format 5), with Format 5 being the most modern and supporting true-color RGB values.

Why does SVG artwork convert well to laser?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and laser projectors are a natural match:

The key insight: laser projectors draw outlines, not fills. SVG paths map directly to laser beam paths — you just need to convert the coordinate system and add appropriate blanking between shapes.

How should I prepare SVG artwork before importing it?

Four habits cover most of the disappointing first conversions:

  1. Keep it simple — lasers draw best with clean, well-separated shapes
  2. Use strokes, not fills — laser projectors can't fill areas
  3. Avoid tiny details — galvanometer mirrors have physical speed limits
  4. Check point count — aim for under 1,000 points per frame at 30fps

Strokes, not fills

The single biggest cause of disappointing first conversions. A laser draws a path — it cannot fill an area. A filled shape is not converted to its outline for you, so if your SVG is a solid logo, expand or convert the fills to strokes before importing and you will know what you're getting.

Fix that in your vector editor before you import and the trace will match what you drew.

How do I check a converted file before it reaches a projector?

Read SAFETY CHECK and OUTPUT STATS in SVG to Laser first: the scanner-load badge tells you whether the heaviest frame fits your selected device profile at the chosen frame rate, and OUTPUT STATS reports the filename, format, size, frame count, and total points. For the Stress Heat Map, Point Classification, Scanner Path, and deeper file analysis, choose Open in ILDA Viewer. These diagnostics review the artwork; they cannot certify safe projection.

Follow your projector and venue safety procedure

Test new artwork only under the controls and procedure established for your projector and venue. Keep the assessed beam paths, termination, physical limits, masks, interlocks, and controlled area in effect. A low-power setting or eyewear does not make an otherwise unassessed path safe.
