Winamp-Style Visualizer for Spotify and YouTube, in a Tab

Open BeamTracer's Winamp Tribute in Chrome or Edge, play Spotify's web player or YouTube in another tab, and choose TAB / SYSTEM AUDIO to share that tab's sound. The collection has more than 20 Winamp-inspired visualizers. Tab capture needs no virtual audio cable; desktop-app audio uses a different setup.

Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com. Somewhere around 1999 a lot of us learned that a music player could be a place. You pressed play, the little window went full screen, and for the next forty minutes you were not doing your homework. This post is for everyone who still gets that itch — and a heads-up that we've built our own answer to it. Not a museum piece. Not your uncle's version.

Winamp still exists; read the full story of what happened to Winamp for its history and announced comeback. This guide focuses on playing your music through a visualizer today.

How do you use a Winamp-style visualizer with Spotify?

Play Spotify's web player in one Chrome or Edge tab and share that tab's audio with BeamTracer in another. Keep listening in Spotify; BeamTracer uses the shared sound to animate the selected visualizer without playing a delayed second copy.

  1. Open BeamTracer Visualizers and choose WINAMP TRIBUTE under CATEGORIES.
  2. Play your music in Spotify's web player in another tab.
  3. In BeamTracer, open Settings → Audio, choose CHANGE, then TAB / SYSTEM AUDIO.
  4. Click CONTINUE, select the Spotify tab, keep Also share tab audio enabled, then click Share.
  5. Choose a visualizer and a factory look under PRESETS; confirm that the visuals follow the track.
  6. For a finished video, load an audio file you have permission to use into STUDIO, add the same visualizer with ADD LAYER → VISUALIZER, then use 5 EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO for MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9).

Live tab capture is for listening and performance; it is not permission to download or republish a streaming track. Studio's file-based export workflow uses your own audio file, rather than recording a protected service by pasting its URL.

Browser tab or desktop app?

The no-install route above uses Spotify in a browser tab. On Windows, system-audio sharing may also be offered with Entire screen → Also share system audio. On macOS, a desktop app may need a routed audio input. Safari does not offer tab audio capture. Check the audio-input guide for your setup. Spotify and YouTube page links do not work as INTERNET RADIO stream URLs.

How do you use the visualizer with YouTube?

Use the same tab-audio route, choosing the YouTube tab in the browser's share dialog. YouTube Music follows that route too when the browser offers audio sharing for its tab.

  1. Play the video or track in another Chrome or Edge tab.
  2. In BeamTracer, choose Settings → Audio → CHANGE → TAB / SYSTEM AUDIO.
  3. Click CONTINUE, select the YouTube tab, enable Also share tab audio, and click Share.
  4. Choose a look under PRESETS and confirm its response; use DISCONNECT to stop capture.
  5. For a finished video with your own audio file, open STUDIO, use ADD LAYER → VISUALIZER, then 5 EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO for MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9).

Where can you run the original MilkDrop presets today?

If what you want is the actual MilkDrop presets, you have real options and we'd rather point you at them than pretend otherwise:

  • Butterchurn runs the original MilkDrop presets in any browser with WebGL 2, and it powers the visualizer inside Webamp, the browser re-creation of Winamp 2.9 with the skins and everything.
  • projectM is the open-source, MilkDrop-compatible engine for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, bundled into several desktop players.
  • MilkDrop 3 is a standalone Windows build that plays presets from any audio source.

They are faithful, they are free, and if you have a folder of .milk files from 2004, they are where those files belong. BeamTracer does not load MilkDrop preset files — the Winamp Tribute collection is an independent collection that does not import those presets.

What does BeamTracer's Winamp Tribute collection add?

The Winamp Tribute collection has more than 20 visualizers with glowing trails, moving viewpoints and layered shapes. It is one category in BeamTracer's larger library of more than 150 modes. Start with these looks:

  • Feedback Dream — glowing signal paths melt into swirling trails inside a vortex that converges to a vanishing point. The closest cousin to the classic feedback look.
  • Vector Echoes — crisp phosphor waveforms that leave afterimages. Its default, Phosphor Tunnel, puts the live waveform at the end of a corridor and grows every echo toward you.
  • Spiral Bloom — curling petals fold into reflective flowers that emit captured, expanding layers.
  • Spectrum Starburst — curved spectrum rays blossom into luminous contour tunnels.
  • Liquid Drift — reflective sheets curl into flowing waves that carry the music down their length.
  • Prism Cathedral — crystal corridors fold into kaleidoscopic roses.

Here's the part your uncle's Winamp couldn't do. Every visualizer in the collection plugs into BeamTracer's modulation matrix: you decide that bass bends the waveform, that a slow generator drifts the camera, and that spectral flux warps the trails — each on its own control, with its own attack and release. Camera views, motion paths and scene depth are controls too. And when you land on something good, SHARE A LOOK turns it into a link a friend can open, or you can bring the exact same visualizer into BeamTracer Studio and render it behind titles and album art.

Start with the two we pinned

The collection opens on Spiral Bloom and Spectrum Starburst for a reason — they're the ones we kept coming back to. Play a track with real bass and let a full chorus go by before you touch a slider.

How do you try the Winamp Tribute visualizers?

Open BeamTracer Visualizers in Chrome or Edge, pick a visualizer from the WINAMP TRIBUTE category, play your music, and adjust a preset or two. Everything below runs in the browser tab; the export step hands the same look to Studio for a finished MP4 or WebM.

  1. Open BeamTracer Visualizers in Chrome or Edge — the collection needs WebGPU, and those are the tested browsers.
  2. In CATEGORIES, open WINAMP TRIBUTE at the bottom of the list and click SPIRAL BLOOM.
  3. Drag an MP3 anywhere onto the canvas, or open Settings → Audio and press play on one of the demo tracks.
  4. Open PRESETS and click through the factory looks; every visualizer in the collection ships with its own grid.
  5. Select the activity icon beside a slider that offers Assign modulation, and choose a source under Modulate with — bass on WAVEFORM HEIGHT is a good first route.
  6. Open SHARE A LOOK and choose COPY LOOK LINK to send the factory look, or PREPARE MY LOOK then COPY MY LOOK LINK to send your edited one.
  7. Click STUDIO, add the same visualizer with ADD LAYER → VISUALIZER, then click 5 EXPORT and RENDER VIDEO to save an MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9) at 1080p or 4K.

Free tier, honestly

The free tier runs every visualizer in the collection and exports watermarked video; the paid plans remove the watermark, and 4K export is included with Bundle and Studio. Nothing in the collection is locked behind a preset pack.

Still choosing a tool? The Winamp-style browser comparison separates classic playback, preset compatibility, and video export.

Which audio route should you use?

Choose the route by where the music is playing. BeamTracer's browser workflow and the original MilkDrop-compatible engines are separate choices; capture support varies by application and platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Winamp visualizer with Spotify?

For BeamTracer’s Winamp-inspired collection, play Spotify in a Chrome or Edge tab and share that tab’s audio. This does not import MilkDrop presets or turn a Spotify URL into a downloadable audio file.

Can I use MilkDrop with YouTube?

MilkDrop-compatible tools need an audio input they can receive. Check the selected application’s capture setup. BeamTracer can instead react to a shared YouTube tab with its own independent Winamp-inspired visualizers.

Is there a MilkDrop visualizer online?

Butterchurn and Webamp run MilkDrop presets in compatible browsers. BeamTracer’s Winamp Tribute is a separate collection and does not load .milk files.

Does the tab-audio workflow work on a Mac?

Use Chrome or Edge and choose the playing browser tab with audio sharing enabled. Capturing a separate desktop app is a different workflow and may require a routed audio input.

Is this the original Winamp visualizer?

No. BeamTracer’s Winamp Tribute is an independent collection inspired by that era. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Winamp, and it does not import MilkDrop presets.

Press play and disappear for a while.
