How Do I Connect a Helios Laser DAC Directly from Chrome?

Connect a Helios laser DAC from Chrome by opening BeamTracer over HTTPS, expanding LASER OUTPUT, selecting HELIOS, and clicking CONNECT HELIOS. Choose the DAC in Chrome's USB picker. BeamTracer uses WebUSB, so you don't need BeamTracer Bridge. Output stays stopped until you arm and start it.

Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com. Load a picture you can recognize before connecting hardware. If the picture already looks wrong in the software preview, check the artwork before troubleshooting USB or the projector.

HELIOS selected in the real Laser Output panel. No physical DAC is connected in this example.

What do I need to connect a Helios from the browser?

You need a Helios USB DAC, a working USB data connection, desktop Chrome or Edge, and a projector with a compatible ILDA input for physical output. Open BeamTracer over HTTPS. The Bitlasers Helios guide identifies the original Helios as a USB-to-ILDA adapter and describes its operating-system requirements.

You can buy a Helios Laser DAC on Amazon. Check the listing and your projector's ILDA compatibility before ordering. BeamTracer is an Amazon Associate and may earn from qualifying purchases through this link.

Helios direct USB does not work in Safari

Safari does not support WebUSB, so it cannot connect directly to a Helios DAC. A browser without WebUSB would need a native bridge for USB access, but BeamTracer does not currently offer Helios through Bridge, and Safari is not supported for BeamTracer Bridge connections. Use desktop Chrome or Edge for this setup. See Browser Compatibility and BeamTracer Bridge.

The DAC sits between the computer and projector: USB carries the computer's instructions to Helios, and an ILDA cable carries the DAC's output to the projector. A projector's SD-card slot, DMX port or Ethernet socket does not establish that it accepts this connection. Check the projector's own manual before buying or connecting hardware.

On macOS, Bitlasers says the original Helios normally works without a driver installation. On Windows 8 and newer, its driver should install automatically. Linux can require USB permission rules. If detection fails, follow the vendor's instructions for your operating system. Chrome's WebUSB device guide explains why an existing driver can prevent browser access to an interface.

Keep physical output stopped during setup

Prepare your projector's physical safety chain and follow its manual before operating. Keep the interlock and emergency stop available. A software picture cannot establish that an installation is safe for people; see Laser Safety.

How do I practice before connecting a projector?

Use the SIMULATOR in BeamTracer's LASER OUTPUT panel. The simulator lets you learn the output controls and inspect a point-stream preview without connecting hardware. It is free on every tier and does not consume a physical-output trial session. Start in the ILDA Viewer, where built-in test patterns provide recognizable artwork.

  1. Open ILDA VIEWER and select PATTERN under TEST SUITE.
  2. Read FILE HEALTH and investigate the displayed notes before considering physical output.
  3. Expand LASER OUTPUT and choose SIMULATOR.
  4. Press CONNECT SIMULATOR.
  5. Press ARM, confirm arming, then press START to inspect the simulator output.
  6. Press BLACKOUT to hold output off while you review the controls.
  7. Use EXPORT ILDA to save an .ild copy for inspection or a compatible player.

A built-in example can still display file notes. The captured PATTERN reports a missing EOF marker; its WITHIN point-count estimate does not remove that warning. Learn what each verdict covers in the file-inspection walkthrough.

How do I select Helios in Chrome's USB picker?

Choose HELIOS, then press CONNECT HELIOS. Chrome opens its USB device picker after that click. Select your Helios there and confirm the browser connection. The device card should then identify the connected DAC. After connecting, check the device card before proceeding to the arming controls.

  1. Keep the projector's physical output disabled while connecting its ILDA cable and the Helios USB data cable.
  2. Open BeamTracer Laser Studio in desktop Chrome or Edge.
  3. Open your source tool and prepare recognizable artwork before enabling output.
  4. Expand LASER OUTPUT and select HELIOS in DEVICE.
  5. Press CONNECT HELIOS and choose the Helios in the browser's USB picker.
  6. Read the connected device card and review the projector's operating limits before any arming action.
  7. To keep an offline copy from ILDA Viewer, use EXPORT ILDA and save the .ild file.

The same output panel serves OSC-1 and the Laser tools. If your source is an OSC-1 drawing, use that app's Laser Output panel to select the device. You can keep developing artwork with the simulator before moving to the physical connection.

Why does reconnecting ask me to choose Helios again?

For the original Helios, reconnect through CONNECT HELIOS and choose it again in the browser picker. BeamTracer's Laser DAC Output guide explains that this device reports no USB serial number, so the browser cannot retain its permission in the same way it can for a device with a serial number.

Close other applications that may be using the DAC before retrying. If Helios does not appear, check the data cable and operating-system detection first. If it appears but the connection fails, review the browser's exact message and the vendor's USB-access guidance.

What do ARM, START and BLACKOUT do?

ARM requests confirmation that output may be enabled; arming alone does not start the beam. START begins output when the connection and controls permit it. STOP ends output, while BLACKOUT requests a stop and holds output off. Pressing Escape also invokes blackout. Keep the projector's physical stop available independently of these browser controls.

A physical DAC adds a safety dock along the bottom of the app. Simulator controls stay inside the panel. Check the connected device before pressing either set of controls, and set point rate and output framing within your projector's specified limits. The DAC's maximum rate is not a scanner rating for your projector.

The Bridge menu-bar BLACKOUT controls outputs reached through Bridge. It does not stop a Helios connected directly to the browser by USB. Use BeamTracer's own controls and your hardware safety chain for that connection.

Can I preview the same artwork in 3D?

In ILDA Viewer, select 3D, open SCENE, choose Cinema under BEAM MODE, and select Orbit Mode in the camera menu. The orbital view helps you inspect the software scene from changing angles while retaining the same loaded artwork. It does not measure a projector's scanner response or audience exposure.

The article's loaded test pattern in a real app-captured Cinema orbit. This is a software simulation, with no projector connected.

Cinema can be previewed on lower plans with a watermark; Studio includes its unwatermarked view. Try the ILDA Viewer to inspect your artwork, or review pricing before choosing a plan for physical output.

Is Helios output free, and do I need Bridge?

The DAC Simulator is free. Physical DAC output is a Studio feature with three free output sessions per account. Direct USB Helios uses WebUSB in desktop Chrome or Edge and needs no BeamTracer Bridge installation. Safari cannot use this direct connection, and installing BeamTracer Bridge does not currently provide a supported Safari workaround. Ether Dream, LaserCube and supported IDN receivers use the Bridge route; see the shared output guide for those connections.
