How Do I Add an Animated Glitch Effect to Laser Artwork?
To animate laser artwork with a glitch effect, load an SVG in BeamTracer Image to Laser, open ANIMATION & MODIFIERS, and choose GLITCH. Adjust INTENSITY for displacement, RATE for how often the pattern changes, and DROPOUT for missing portions. DOWNLOAD ILDA saves the resulting frames as an animated .ild file.
Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com. Watch the star’s corners as the pattern changes. They make small shifts easier to spot while you tune the effect.

How do I turn a static SVG into glitch animation?
Choose GLITCH after uploading the SVG. It creates an editable Glitch modifier that breaks and offsets portions of the paths. Start with the Quick Start's settings before changing one control at a time.
Use this original star SVG for the same input.
- Open Image to Laser.
- Upload the sample SVG under IMAGE SOURCE.
- Open ANIMATION & MODIFIERS and select GLITCH.
- Start with INTENSITY → 0.35, RATE → 4.00 and DROPOUT → 0.12.
- Leave SEED → 1979 while comparing the controls.
- Set DURATION → 3.0 s and FRAME RATE → 30 FPS, then inspect POINT BUDGET with FIT 30 FPS selected.
- Press DOWNLOAD ILDA to save the animated .ild file.
The GLITCH Quick Start on the sample star, at its original Intensity 0.35, Rate 4.00 and Dropout 0.12.
Choosing another Quick Start replaces the current modifier chain. Use SAVE PRESET if you want to keep your adjustments before trying another recipe. PLAY restarts the chain. The modifier guide covers the other effects.
How do I make the glitch stronger?
Raise INTENSITY to increase the size and frequency of path displacement. Keep RATE and DROPOUT fixed while comparing it so you can judge the breakup itself.
INTENSITY 0.08 → 0.65 → 0.35. Rate remains 4.00 and Dropout remains 0.12.
At low intensity, most of the outline remains intact. Raise it and watch the displaced pieces around the corners. Let the animation run through several changes before deciding on a setting.
How do I change the speed of the glitch?
RATE controls how many glitch-pattern changes occur each second. It changes the rhythm of the breakup. DURATION controls how long the exported clip lasts, and FRAME RATE controls how many frames are stored per second.
RATE 1.00 → 8.00 → 4.00. The other Glitch controls stay fixed.
Keep the rate low while learning the effect. A high setting produces rapid visual changes; check the finished animation on its intended display before using it in a show.
How do I make parts of the outline disappear?
Raise DROPOUT to increase the maximum fraction of path points temporarily removed by the glitch. Start at 0 to inspect displacement without that extra removal, then raise it gradually.
DROPOUT 0.00 → 0.40 → 0.12. Intensity remains 0.35 and Rate remains 4.00.
SEED chooses a repeatable breakup pattern. Keep it fixed while comparing the other controls. Change the seed when you want a different variation with the same settings.
Does the glitch survive the ILDA download?
Yes. DOWNLOAD ILDA saves the animated geometry and point colors. The example uses 3.0 seconds at 30 FPS, producing 90 frames. Reopen the download and play it to check the movement, rather than judging the export from a still final frame.
In ILDA Viewer, choose PLAYBACK CONTROLS → FPS → 30 and BEAT SYNC → OFF to review the original timing.
The actual file, reopened at 30 FPS with beat sync off.
Recheck POINT BUDGET after changing the artwork, modifiers or frame rate. If fitting reports omitted detail, reduce the complexity or choose a lower frame rate and inspect the saved result. The file-health lesson explains the point-load checks. A readable preview and a low point count do not certify physical laser safety.
How do I preview the glitch animation in a room?
In Viewer, select 3D, choose SCENE → BEAM MODE → Cinema — Premium fog, then select Orbit Mode. The camera moves around the simulated light while the same animation plays. The opening clip uses this view with Lights off and the GRID floor.
The room, fog and camera treatment belong to the preview; they are not stored in the ILDA file. Follow the Laser DAC Output guide and Laser Safety guide before any physical output. No projector was used for these examples.
