Workout Timer Overlay for Long Videos: Many Sets, One Take

To put a timer on a workout video with several sets, open BeamTracer Studio and apply the WORKOUT template, then edit its schedule: name and time every exercise and recovery, and press REPEAT SCHEDULE for the rounds. One card carries the interval clock, the exercise name, the set number and the whole-workout clock. EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO writes the MP4.

Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com — this time we're timing a whole training session, eleven intervals and all, over one continuous take.

A little while ago we wrote up how to put a countdown on a single workout clip — forty-five seconds of mountain climbers, a ring, a number, done. That post did its job, and then the question we kept getting back was the one it did not answer: what about the whole session?

Because that is what people actually record. You set the phone on the dresser, prop it against a water bottle, hit record, and train for twenty-two minutes straight — warm up, five exercises, a recovery between each one, cool down. One long take. And now you need eleven timers, each with its own name, its own length and its own color, plus a clock telling everybody how much of the whole thing is left.

One card, four readouts: seconds left in this exercise, what the exercise is called, which set you are on, and how much of the workout remains. Nothing on that card was keyframed.

How do you put a timer on a workout video with several sets?

You author the schedule once, on a card that knows what a set is. The WORKOUT timer in BeamTracer Studio holds two time scales at the same time — the current exercise and the whole session — and it changes its own name, color and clocks at every boundary. Every change is on screen instantly, so you render once, at the end, when you are done deciding.

  1. Open BeamTracer Studio, click TEMPLATES, and choose WORKOUT for a complete, editable session.
  2. In WORKOUT SCHEDULE → WORKOUT SETUP, pick ONE WORKOUT or FULL WORKOUT, then set the duration source to DRAFT, VIDEO, or AUDIO.
  3. Name and time every row in the set editor, then press REPEAT SCHEDULE for as many independent sets as you need.
  4. Set the clocks and the progress shape in CLOCKS + PROGRESS, and the card's look in GLASS + APPEARANCE.
  5. Click a block in the colored lane under the canvas to jump there, or drag its edge to change that section's length.
  6. Press SAVE in the header to keep the project, or MY PRESETS → ADD LOOK + SCHEDULE to carry the card and its intervals into the next video.
  7. Render the session with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.

Why do the usual timer methods fall apart on a long video?

The single-clip advice is bad enough. At session length it stops being advice and becomes a hobby. These are the real methods people are pointed at — each row comes from a published how-to we watched, and as of 2026-08-19 those tutorials are still what search serves up — and the real cost of each one:

The pattern is the same every time: the tool has text, and you are being asked to animate text into behaving like a schedule. None of those methods knows what a set is. None of them knows that RECOVERY comes after MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS. None of them can tell you, at 14:06, that you have 7:54 left.

A layer that knows the schedule removes the entire category of work.

How do you start a full workout schedule in one click?

Open BeamTracer Studio, click TEMPLATES in the header, search WORKOUT, and apply it. That gives you a working session on the first click: a spoken-intro offset, a Warm Up, five named exercises with recoveries between them, a Cool Down, and a closing offset — all of it editable, none of it precious.

If you would rather build from nothing, TEMPLATES → BLANK then ADD LAYER → TIMER → WORKOUT puts the same card on an empty frame.

Two layers, one settings rail. Everything the workout does lives in those groups: the schedule, the clocks, the glass, the transitions, and the presets.

Where does the workout's length come from?

From the duration source you choose, and nothing else. WORKOUT SCHEDULE → WORKOUT SETUP is where you pick the shape and the length, and the source you name there is the authority — loading a video later does not silently re-time a Draft.

Shape, length, and the seconds you leave for the coach to talk.

ONE WORKOUT is a single named exercise. FULL WORKOUT is a session, and that is the one this post is about. HIIT and YOGA drop in a full editable example if you would rather edit than type.

Then pick where the length comes from:

  • DRAFT — you set it. This is the one to use when the video does not exist yet, and the one that makes the train-to-your-own-timer trick below possible.
  • VIDEO — match the master video you loaded.
  • AUDIO — match a separate music track.

START OFFSET is the small control that makes videos look produced: it keeps the card hidden for the opening seconds while you introduce the session. Move the playhead to where the talking stops and press START AT PLAYHEAD · I.

Nothing re-times behind your back

The source you pick is the authority. Loading a video later does not silently re-time a Draft — BeamTracer Studio tells you the lengths disagree and offers USE VIDEO LENGTH, so the re-time is a decision you make rather than one that happens to you.

How do you name and time every set?

In the set editor, one compact set at a time. Every row gets a name, a length in seconds and a color, and REPEAT SCHEDULE turns one authored block into as many independent copies as you ask for — so renaming set six does not rename the other seven.

  1. Select the timer layer and open WORKOUT SCHEDULE.
  2. Name the first row — the exercise, the pose, WARM UP — and enter its length in seconds.
  3. Give the row a color, then use COPY to duplicate it or DELETE to remove it.
  4. Press ADD SET for another independent set, or use the arrows to move between the ones you have.
  5. Type the number of rounds and press REPEAT SCHEDULE.
  6. Rename the header word from SET to CIRCUIT, ROUND, POSE, or BLOCK if that is what your session calls them.
  7. Render it with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.
One set at a time, so the panel never turns into a list you scroll.

The set editor shows a single compact set at a time — arrows move between them — so a twelve-section workout never becomes a rail you have to scroll for a minute to reach the end of.

And if the session is the same block eight times over, type the number and press REPEAT SCHEDULE. It makes that many independent sets — so when set six turns out to be squat pulses instead of leg lifts, renaming it does not rename the other seven.

A yoga sequence and a Tabata block are not the same thing and should not be forced to use the same noun, which is why the header word is yours too.

How do you change one section's length after you've built it?

Drag its right edge in the colored lane under the canvas. That lane is the workout, not a picture of it — click any block to jump to that phase and the matching set opens in the rail, and you can click while playback is running.

No sequences, no ripple settings

This is where the not learning a video editor part pays off. Nothing to discover, no snapping preferences: there are eleven colored blocks and you drag the one that is wrong.

What happens when the schedule ends before the video does?

Whatever you tell it to. AFTER covers the untidy part of every real recording — the bit where the schedule and the footage do not end on the same frame. END OFFSET reserves the closing seconds for a goodbye or an outro card, and then three choices decide what the schedule does with any time it did not use:

None of the three needs another timer layer, and switching between them is one click, so you can just look at all three and pick.

What should the two clocks show?

Whatever the session is better sold as. INTERVAL TIME and WORKOUT TIME are set separately, which matters more than it sounds like it does — the combination most follow-along videos want is the interval counting REMAINING with the whole workout also counting REMAINING, so nobody has to do arithmetic at 170 bpm.

The two clocks are independent, on purpose.

Swap either to ELAPSED if your session is better sold as progress than as suffering.

OVERALL PROGRESS draws the whole-workout position as a RING, a LINE, a card FILL, or an OUTLINE that runs around the card's edge like a runner on a track.

SHOW UP NEXT puts the next exercise and its length on the card, which is the single most requested thing in follow-along comments — people want to know whether to reach for the dumbbells now. SHOW SET NUMBER adds SET 2 / 5, and USE PHASE COLORS lets each section's own color take over the card while it is active.

How do you make the card look like your channel?

Start with one of four treatments and then take every element's color separately. DARK GLASS, LIGHT GLASS, CLEAR, or SOLID is usually enough; ADVANCED opens the rest when it is not.

ADVANCED gives you CARD WIDTH / HEIGHT, GLASS EFFECT, BACKGROUND BLUR, CARD OPACITY, CORNER RADIUS, and AUTO CONTRAST to keep the text readable when you switch between a dark card and a light one.

Then the part that makes it stop looking like somebody else's template: the interval clock, the section label, the workout clock, the progress arc, its track, the divider, the glass tint and the border each have their own color. TIMER FONT is the same Google font picker the titles use, so the card can match whatever your channel already looks like.

Pick a monospaced face if you are going to fiddle. A clock is the one piece of text on your video whose characters change while it plays, and in a proportional font the whole number shuffles sideways every time a 1 shows up.

How do you reuse the card on next week's video?

Save it as a preset rather than rebuilding it. SAVE in the header stores the entire project; MY PRESETS is for carrying the timer into a different one.

Two different things worth keeping, kept separately.

SAVE in the header stores the media references, both layers, the full schedule and every appearance choice. Reopen it next week and it is exactly where you left it.

  • ADD LOOK saves the design only. Use it when every video should look the same but the workouts differ.
  • ADD LOOK + SCHEDULE saves the design and the interval pattern. Use it when Tuesday is always the same 40-on / 20-off circuit and only the footage changes.

Build the look once, and every video after this one starts finished.

Can you build the timer before you have filmed anything?

Yes — set the duration source to DRAFT and the schedule needs no footage at all. We built this for footage that already exists. Then, while testing it, we noticed we were doing something else with it entirely: building the schedule first, exporting it, and putting it on a laptop screen to train to.

It is a teleprompter. A newscaster does not memorise the bulletin — they read it off a screen just out of shot, and the delivery sounds rehearsed because the words are right there. This is the same thing for exercise, with one difference worth noticing: the cues you are reading are the schedule you just built. You are following your own plan back at yourself.

Which is one less thing to think about at exactly the moment you have no spare capacity to think. Nobody has ever been forty seconds into leg lifts and enjoyed the sensation of trying to remember what comes after leg lifts. That pause — the one where you look off-camera, or say "um, next is…", or just stop — is where long takes go to die and get re-shot. Take it away and you are far more likely to come out the other end with one continuous take instead of six attempts and a folder full of false starts.

  1. Set the duration source to DRAFT and enter the length you plan to train for.
  2. Lay out the sets: warm up, exercises, recoveries, cool down.
  3. Go to LOOK and pick COLOR for the backdrop, so the card sits on a plain plate.
  4. Choose EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO and play the file on a laptop, a tablet, or the TV where you can see it. Train the session.
  5. Come back, load the recording as your backdrop, and switch the duration source to VIDEO — or take USE VIDEO LENGTH when BeamTracer Studio points out the difference.
  6. Nudge the start offset and drag any block whose edge landed a second or two off. The clocks re-read the change as you drag it.
  7. Render the finished video with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.

You end up with two useful files out of one afternoon: the timer you trained to, and the finished video with the same schedule burned into it.

The last seconds of an exercise, the changeover, and the recovery that follows. The card changes its name, its color and both clocks on its own, and it tells you what is coming next while you are still catching your breath.

Do you have to render the video to see a change?

No — and that is the thing we noticed most while building this. Every one of those decisions — swapping RING for OUTLINE, dropping a recovery from fifteen seconds to ten, turning UP NEXT on, changing the card from charcoal to white — shows up as you make it. Full resolution, playing, right there.

That matters more for a 22-minute session than for a 45-second clip, because a long video is a long list of small decisions, and if each one costs you a progress bar you stop making them. You keep the first thing that was tolerable. Plenty of browser tools in this neighbourhood render in the cloud: you make a change, you join a queue, you come back and look. That is a perfectly reasonable architecture, and it is a terrible way to design anything.

How do you export the finished session?

When the schedule and design are ready, the EXPORT step summarises what is about to happen — platform, frame, rate, file, length, audio, and every layer — and RENDER VIDEO writes the file. A longer workout or a slower machine can take more time; check the saved file before publishing it.

  1. Open the EXPORT step and read the summary row by row.
  2. Click RENDER VIDEO to open the export dialog.
  3. Set PLATFORM and ASPECT RATIO for where the video is going.
  4. Set RESOLUTION and a FRAME RATE that matches your source.
  5. Save the file, then scrub the section boundaries in the saved video.
  6. Scrub to a good frame and press YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL for a 1280 × 720 JPEG.
  7. Choose FORMATMP4 · H.264 for every platform and editor, or WebM · VP9.

What should you check before you upload?

Play the rendered file end to end — or at least scrub the boundaries, which is where the mistakes hide. Three things to check:

  1. The first section starts where the talking stops. That is the START OFFSET, and it is the most common thing to be a couple of seconds out.
  2. The exercise names match what you are actually doing. A schedule that says SQUAT PULSES over footage of high knees is worse than no timer at all.
  3. The backdrop is there. If your footage was WebM, this is where you find out — upload MP4 / H.264 instead.
