How to Add a Countdown Timer to a Workout Video (HIIT)

To add a countdown timer to a workout video, open BeamTracer Studio in your browser, start from the BLANK template, and upload your MP4 as the backdrop. Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com, and this is my full walkthrough for putting a real interval countdown on workout footage — work, rest, rounds, all of it.

You have the footage. Forty-five seconds of mountain climbers, shot on a phone, propped against a water bottle. What it needs is the number in the corner ticking down to zero, because that number is the entire reason a follow-along workout works — nobody counts their own reps while their heart rate is at 170.

So you go looking for how to add one, and every answer is worse than the last. Buy a plugin. Screen-record your phone's clock app and key out the background. Keyframe a text layer by hand, forty-five times. Subscribe to a template site.

None of that is necessary. A countdown is a clock drawn on top of a video, and drawing it takes about ninety seconds in a browser tab.

How do you add a countdown timer to a workout video?

You add a timer layer rather than animating text into looking like one. In BeamTracer Studio the countdown reads the clip it is drawn over, so it starts at the right number and lands on 0:00 without a single keyframe. Here is the whole job, start to finished MP4.

  1. Open BeamTracer Studio, click TEMPLATES in the header, and choose BLANK.
  2. Go to the LOOK step and put your clip in the frame with BACKDROP SOURCE → IMAGE/VIDEO → UPLOAD VIDEO. Use MP4.
  3. Click ADD LAYER → TIMER → WORKOUT for the interval clock, section name, whole-workout clock and progress ring on one rounded card — or DOWN for a single plain countdown.
  4. Open WORKOUT SCHEDULE, name each section, enter its length in seconds, and press REPEAT SCHEDULE to lay the pattern across the workout.
  5. Pick DARK GLASS, LIGHT GLASS, CLEAR, or SOLID, then tune the colors, blur, opacity, and progress style.
  6. Set what the clock counts on the FRAME step under ADVANCED, with TRIM FOR EXPORT.
  7. Read the EXPORT summary, then click RENDER VIDEO to save the file as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.

The whole thing, start to finish, in under two minutes. The written guide below covers the same ground with more detail on the parts worth understanding — the nine timer formats, how intervals repeat, and why the export window is the thing that matters.

The finished frame: your footage as the backdrop, a ring that closes as the interval runs, and the clock counting down inside it. No keyframes were placed to make either of them move.

Why are the usual countdown methods so painful?

Because none of those tools has a timer. They have text, and you are being asked to animate text into looking like a timer. It's worth being specific about what you're escaping, because each of these is somebody's honest recommendation and each has a real cost. These are the routes the tutorials were still recommending when I checked in August 2026:

A layer that knows what time it is removes the whole problem.

How do you put your own footage behind the timer?

Start from an empty frame and upload the clip as the backdrop. BeamTracer Studio's default template is built for music videos — cover art, title, artist — and for a workout clip you want nothing in the frame but your footage.

  1. Click TEMPLATES in the header, then BLANK.
  2. Go to the LOOK step and open BACKDROP SOURCE.
  3. Choose the IMAGE/VIDEO tab, then UPLOAD VIDEO, and pick your clip.
  4. With the backdrop layer selected, open ADVANCED for CROP / FIT, per-edge crop, position, scale and rotation.
  5. Choose COVER to fill the frame and crop the overflow — or use the FRAME step to make the whole project vertical instead, which is usually the better answer for a phone clip.

TEMPLATES in the header. DEFAULT is the music-video layout; BLANK is an empty frame.

MP4 exports; WebM is for preview only.

COVER fills the frame and crops the overflow, which is almost always what you want when a vertical phone clip is going into a wide frame.

The upload hint distinguishes an export-ready MP4 from a preview-only WebM, and that distinction is the one to read before you pick a file.

Upload MP4 / H.264, not WebM

This is the single most common way a first export disappoints. WebM previews perfectly in the editor and then does not appear in your rendered file. If your camera or screen recorder gave you a WebM, convert it before you upload.

Which progress shape should you put around the countdown?

RING is the interval-timer shape. A bare number works, but a number inside a ring works better, because a follow-along viewer reads shape faster than digits — you can see roughly where you are out of the corner of your eye without focusing on it. ADD LAYER → PLAYHEAD opens a picker of eight progress styles:

If you are using the WORKOUT timer, its overall ring or line is already part of the card, so you can skip the separate playhead. Add one only when you want a second, larger progress shape elsewhere in the frame.

Place the RING where you want the clock to sit, then set THICKNESS — the default is heavy enough to dominate the frame, and somewhere around a fifth reads as a timer rather than a graphic. X SCALE and Y SCALE set the diameter.

The ring fills as the clip plays. Paired with a DOWN clock that gives you both halves of the picture at once: the ring is how much of the interval is done, the number is how much is left. There is no drain option for a ring — the fill / drain choice belongs to the DISK style.

BAR across the bottom is the other one worth knowing: it stays out of the way entirely and still tells the viewer where they are.

The picker replaces the grid in the same rail. Choose the shape that communicates progress most clearly, then click the image if you need to inspect every option at full size.

Which countdown format should you choose?

ADD LAYER → TIMER turns the rail into a style picker with a live sample of each format, so you can see the exact shape of the number before you place it. DOWN is the classic interval countdown; WORKOUT is the one to take when the video contains work, rest and rounds.

Each timer style shows a real sample rather than only a name.

For one continuous interval, click DOWN. The countdown lands on the canvas, and it is already running against your clip — no expression, no keyframes. For a full session with work, rest, and rounds, click WORKOUT instead. It places the interval clock, section label, whole-workout clock, and progress indicator as one card, so you move and save them together.

Every timer layer carries HUE, POSITION X / Y, SCALE, ROTATE, OPACITY and LOCK LAYER. To sit the clock inside the ring, give both layers the same POSITION X / Y and pull the timer's SCALE down until the digits clear the circle. They stay in step without any effort on your part, because both are reading the same window — that is the whole reason a ring and the number inside it can never disagree.

Add the ring before the timer and the timer lands on top of it. If you did it the other way round, drag the rows in the layers rail — the list is drawn topmost first.

The standard clock controls for color and type.

COLOR, HUE and TIMER FONT are all yours. The color picker sets the exact color — pull it from your brand or your cover art. The HUE slider beside it does the same job as a number, which is what lets you drive it from the audio if you want the clock to shift with the track. And TIMER FONT is the same Google font picker the title and artist lines use, so the clock can match the rest of your typography instead of being stuck on one face.

One caution worth knowing before you pick something decorative: a clock is the one piece of text on your video whose characters change while it plays. In a proportional font the whole number shuffles sideways every time a 1 appears, which reads as jitter. A monospaced face holds still. That is why the default is one — but if a condensed display face is the look you want, take it, and just check the result at full size before you export.

What does the countdown count down from?

The export window. Not the file, not the timeline — the window that is going to be rendered. By default that window is the whole clip, so a 45-second video gives you a countdown starting at 0:45. Everything below follows from that one fact, and it is what makes the timer work without any keyframes at all.

  1. Go to the FRAME step and switch the rail to ADVANCED.
  2. Turn on TRIM FOR EXPORT. A green box appears on the waveform strip at the bottom of the window.
  3. Drag the box to the part of the clip you want. The gear icon on the box opens numeric fields if you would rather type exact times than drag.
  4. Watch the countdown re-read the box immediately — a thirty-second box exports 0:30 → 0:00, starting at the box's left edge.
  5. Render the trimmed window with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.

The timer counts the export window

Set a box somewhere in the middle of a two-minute take and the countdown still starts at thirty and ends at zero, because the window is what it measures. That's why re-timing costs nothing. Drag the box longer, the countdown gets longer. There's nothing to re-key.

WORKOUT uses that same window as the total workout length, then runs its section schedule inside it. Shorten the export window and both the whole-workout clock and the visible interval lane update together.

Here is a ten-second window running, so you can see what "the timer counts the window" actually looks like — it starts at 0:10 because the clip is ten seconds, and it lands on 0:00 at the last frame:

No keyframes were set. The clip is ten seconds, so the countdown is ten seconds.

FRAME in ADVANCED. TRIM FOR EXPORT is the control that sets what the countdown counts.

How do you build a 45-on, 15-off interval schedule?

That is what the WORKOUT timer is for. With the card selected, open WORKOUT SCHEDULE and author the pattern once — the interval lane under the canvas lays it over the waveform, and every repeated round comes from the same pattern.

  1. Name the first section WORK, ALL OUT!, or the exercise itself, then enter 45 seconds and choose its phase color.
  2. Name the next section REST or RECOVERY, enter 15, and choose a second color.
  3. Set REPEAT to 8, then press REPEAT SCHEDULE. The interval lane under the canvas lays the full pattern over the waveform.
  4. Click any block to hear that transition. Drag a block's edge when the work or rest length needs changing.
  5. Set INTERVAL TIME and WORKOUT TIME to REMAINING or ELAPSED independently — the two clocks do not have to agree.
  6. Turn on SHOW SET NUMBER and SHOW UP NEXT if the viewer needs both cues, or turn them off for a quieter card.
  7. Render the session with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.

When the pattern runs out before the video does

FILL TO END keeps cycling, EXTEND FINAL holds the last section, and LEAVE REMAINDER removes the card once the schedule finishes. A delayed start stays hidden until START OFFSET. None of those choices needs another timer layer.

For the Apple Fitness-style treatment, start with DARK GLASS or LIGHT GLASS. Choose RING for a compact total-progress mark beside the lower clock, or LINE for a quieter bar along the card's bottom edge. Then adjust GLASS EFFECT, BACKGROUND BLUR, CARD OPACITY, and CORNER RADIUS. The interval clock, section label, whole-workout clock, progress, track, divider, glass tint, and border can all have separate colors; USE PHASE COLORS lets the active work/rest color take over automatically.

Use the normal header SAVE when you want this exact workout to reopen with the project. MY PRESETS → ADD LOOK saves the design without replacing another workout's schedule; ADD LOOK + SCHEDULE saves both when the interval pattern is the reusable part.

How do you export the finished workout video?

EXPORT shows a summary — platform, frame, rate, file, length, audio, and every layer that will appear. Read it once; it's faster than re-rendering. Then RENDER VIDEO writes the real file to your machine.

  1. Open the EXPORT step and read the summary row by row.
  2. Click RENDER VIDEO to open the export dialog.
  3. Set PLATFORM and ASPECT RATIO — 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Shorts and Reels, 4:5 for the Instagram feed.
  4. Set RESOLUTION to 1080p, or 4K on a Bundle plan.
  5. Set FRAME RATE to 30, or 60 if your source is 60.
  6. Choose FORMATMP4 · H.264 unless you have a reason not to, or WebM · VP9.
  7. Save the file, play it back through the timer boundaries, then use YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL to write the current frame as a 1280 × 720 JPEG.

The footer restates the frame, size, rate and the exact frame count before you commit to a render.

The EXPORT summary. Read it once before a long render — it is faster than re-rendering.

Rendering can take longer on a slower machine. Check the saved video before publishing: play through the timer boundaries and confirm that the backdrop, clocks, and audio are what you intended.

Is it free, and is there anything to install?

Everything above runs in a browser tab. There's nothing to install and you don't need an account to try it. The free tier covers ten finished exports a month and they carry a BeamTracer watermark — the render dialog says so before you commit. Does the countdown need music?

No, and the way this works is worth knowing.

BeamTracer Studio was built around audio, so the natural assumption is that a timer needs a soundtrack. It doesn't. If the only thing you load is a video, the video's own length becomes the timeline and every timer, playhead and analysis layer follows it.

Load both a music track and a video, and a MUSIC · VIDEO · MIX control appears on the transport. That control picks which source you hear and which one drives the timing. The EXPORT summary names the source it is using, so you can confirm before rendering.

For a workout video the usual choice is: music track for the soundtrack, and the video for the vocal cues — or MIX for both.

What should you check before you upload?

Play the rendered file, and check three things. They are the three that go wrong.

  1. The length matches the LENGTH row in the export summary.
  2. The audio is there, if you meant to include it. A video-only render is silent by design when INCLUDE AUDIO is off.
  3. The backdrop did not vanish. If your footage was WebM, this is where you find out. Re-upload as MP4.

Then scrub to the frame you want and use YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL on the export step — it saves the current preview frame as a 1280 × 720 JPEG under 2 MB, which is exactly YouTube's custom-thumbnail spec.
