Stopwatch or Timer Overlay on a Video (No Screen-Recording)
To put a stopwatch on a video, open BeamTracer Studio in your browser, upload the clip as the backdrop, and choose ADD LAYER → TIMER → UP. The clock reads the export window, so it starts at zero and ends on the clip's own length with nothing keyframed. EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO writes an MP4 you can drop into whatever you already edit in.
Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com, and today it's timer overlays — why the film-your-phone trick keeps failing, and the two-minute layer that replaces it.
Somebody, somewhere, is right now screen-recording their phone's stopwatch app so they can put the numbers on a video. They will then spend twenty minutes cropping it, masking it, and trying to key a black background that is not quite black.
It is the most-recommended method on the internet for a reason: it works, it costs nothing, and it uses tools everyone already has. It is also, once you have done it twice, clearly the wrong shape of solution — you are filming a clock in order to show a clock.
A timer that is a layer, not a screen recording of another app — in your color, in your font, inside a ring that closes as it runs. None of which a clock app will ever give you.
How do you put a stopwatch overlay on a video?
You use a tool that has a real timer as a layer type, and you stop animating text into looking like one. In BeamTracer Studio the clock is drawn over your footage and reads the same window the video does, so the numbers are right by construction. Here is the whole job, from an empty frame to an MP4.
- Open BeamTracer Studio, click TEMPLATES, and choose BLANK.
- Put your clip behind the clock with LOOK → BACKDROP SOURCE → IMAGE/VIDEO → UPLOAD VIDEO, or leave the backdrop on the COLOR tab for an overlay clip.
- Click ADD LAYER → TIMER and pick UP — the stopwatch.
- Set COLOR, TIMER FONT, SCALE, POSITION X / Y, ROTATE and OPACITY so it reads on a phone.
- Add the shape with ADD LAYER → PLAYHEAD → RING, then pull THICKNESS down until it reads as a timer rather than a graphic.
- Set what the clock measures on the FRAME step under ADVANCED, with TRIM FOR EXPORT.
- Read the EXPORT summary, then click RENDER VIDEO to save the file as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.
Why does screen-recording a phone stopwatch keep failing?
Each of these is a small problem. Together they are the reason the finished result looks homemade.
- The background is never a clean key. A phone clock app is dark grey with soft anti-aliased digits. Keying it leaves a halo; masking it leaves a hard rectangle you have to hide.
- You cannot restyle it. The font, color, size and layout belong to the clock app. If your video's palette is warm, the timer is still whatever iOS decided.
- The start time is baked in. You had to press start at the right moment while recording. Get it wrong and the fix is another recording.
- Re-timing means re-shooting. Shorten the segment and the numbers no longer match.
- Frame rate mismatch. Your screen recording is 60 fps, your project is 24, and a clock is exactly the subject where conformed frames show up as a stutter on the tenths.
The Keynote route people use for iMovie deserves special mention: you build one slide per second — sometimes with a script to generate them — and export the deck as a movie, because each slide lands as exactly one second. It is genuinely clever. It is also making a slideshow in order to show a number.
Which video editors have a real timer layer?
Almost none of them. iMovie has no timer at all. Final Cut Pro's generators count
numbers but do not format M:SS. CapCut gives you text. That is why the standard
advice ends up being a screen recording, one number per second by hand, or — in
iMovie's case — a whole Keynote deck.

That table describes each tool as of August 2026. These editors ship updates constantly, so if a cell decides a purchase for you, verify it in the current version first.
Nothing here is a criticism of those editors. A timer is a niche layer type, and none of them set out to be a clock. It is only worth knowing which box you are in before you start.
Should the timer sit on your footage or on a flat color?
Both work, and the choice depends on where the clip is going. Put your footage in as the backdrop when the finished MP4 is the video. Leave the backdrop a flat color when your edit already exists and you only want the numbers — and unlike a phone screen recording, that background is a real flat color that keys cleanly.
Burned in. LOOK → BACKDROP SOURCE → IMAGE/VIDEO → UPLOAD VIDEO puts your footage in the frame and the timer draws over it.
As an overlay clip. Leave the backdrop a flat color on the COLOR tab. You get a clean timer on a solid background, which you can composite in your editor with a blend mode or a keyer.

WebM previews in the editor and then does not export — a confusing way to lose ten minutes.
Which timer format should you pick?
UP is the stopwatch. ADD LAYER → TIMER opens nine formats, each with a live sample so you can see the exact shape of the number before you place it — and you can add a second TIMER layer for a second format, a big elapsed clock beside a small percentage, say.

Then set COLOR, SCALE, POSITION X / Y, ROTATE and OPACITY.
This is the part the screen-recorded method cannot answer at all. COLOR takes an exact value, the HUE slider next to it can be driven from the audio, and TIMER FONT is the same Google font picker the title and artist lines use. A recording of your phone's clock app is whatever iOS decided, forever.

How do you add a progress ring or bar beside the digits?
A phone stopwatch shows you digits. That is all it has. ADD LAYER → PLAYHEAD gives you the same measurement as a shape, in eight styles — and because every one of them reads the same window the timer does, a shape and the number next to it can never drift apart.

Put a RING around the clock for an interval-timer look, a BAR at the bottom edge to stay out of the way, or a PIE in the corner beside the digits. Add the playhead before the timer and the digits land on top of it.
THICKNESS is the control to pull down when the default feels more like a bold graphic than a timer.

What does the stopwatch actually measure?
The export window — not the file, and not the timeline. By default that window is the whole clip, so the numbers run from zero to the clip's own length. To use a slice instead, set the window, and the clock re-reads it as you drag.
- Go to the FRAME step and switch the rail to ADVANCED.
- Turn on TRIM FOR EXPORT.
- Drag the green box on the waveform strip to the slice you want, or type exact times through its gear icon.
- Watch the clock re-read the box immediately — change your mind about the length and you drag a box, you do not re-record anything.
- Render the slice with EXPORT → RENDER VIDEO as MP4 · H.264 or WebM · VP9.
The window is what the timer measures
Not the file and not the timeline — the export window. So the window is the setting that decides what the numbers say, and it is the part the screen-recording method cannot match at all.
How do you export the finished overlay?
EXPORT lists exactly what is about to happen — platform, frame, rate, file, length, audio, and every layer. Read that once, then RENDER VIDEO writes the real file to your machine.
- Open the EXPORT step and read the summary row by row.
- Click RENDER VIDEO.
- Set PLATFORM and ASPECT RATIO for where the clip is going.
- Set RESOLUTION to 1080p or 4K.
- Set FRAME RATE to match your project — a clock is the single most conform-sensitive thing you can put on a timeline.
- Choose FORMAT — MP4 · H.264 for any editor or platform, or WebM · VP9 — then play the saved file and check the clock before adding it to your edit.

- Scale it up more than feels right. You are judging it on a monitor at arm's length; your viewer is on a phone. If it looks slightly too big on the desktop preview, it is about right.
- Keep it out of the crop zone. Anything in the bottom fifth of a 16:9 frame disappears under captions and platform UI, and anything in the far corners disappears when someone reposts your video vertically.
- Match the frame rate to the project, not the other way around. A clock is the single most conform-sensitive thing you can put on a timeline.
