How Do You Make Hand-Tracking Video Effects in BeamTracer?

To make hand-tracking video effects in BeamTracer, open Performer’s FX Rack, put a camera or uploaded video in VISUAL SOURCE, and add HAND FRAME. Hold both hands in view to open a color window between your fingertips. Add TRACK for lines or MASK for layered treatments, then record live input or render uploaded footage.

Hi, I’m Trina with BeamTracer.com. The useful part of this effect is that the window belongs to your hands: spread them and it grows; tilt them and it turns. Start with that one clear gesture, then add texture only where the picture needs it.

This layered example uses a HANDS mask with color and texture effects. The simpler HAND FRAME treatment below is a separate way to make a moving window; neither automatically recreates every edit in a finished social reel.

What does a finished hand-tracking composite look like?

This short showcase combines an original hand-tracking effect and masks made in BeamTracer with an animated character created using Higgsfield. The final composite was made in Final Cut Pro. It shows a finished creative experiment, rather than a step-by-step tutorial or an effect made entirely inside BeamTracer.

How do you open a color window between your hands?

Use HAND FRAME for the direct color-window effect. It follows the space between your thumbs and index fingers, so both hands need to remain visible. The PALETTE, BANDS and SPEED controls change the color treatment; SMOOTHING changes how gently the window follows movement.

  1. Open BeamTracer Visualizers, choose PERFORMER, and open FX Rack with the sparkle button.
  2. In VISUAL SOURCE, choose CAMERA for a live view, or VIDEO · IMAGE and Choose a video or image file for footage you own.
  3. Under ADD AN EFFECT, add HAND FRAME.
  4. Hold up both hands with thumbs and index fingers spread like the corners of a frame. Watch the window open, stretch and tilt.
  5. Choose a PALETTE, then adjust BANDS, SPEED and SMOOTHING while keeping both hands visible.
  6. For uploaded video, finish with RENDER → RENDER VIDEO → SAVE VIDEO to download MP4 or WebM. For a live camera, use RECORD instead.

Start with a readable gesture

Keep your fingertips separated and inside the camera frame. If a hand leaves view, the window closes. That is different from a color control failing to respond.

If an uploaded clip plays live but RENDER says it cannot be exported, convert the source to MP4 with H.264 video and try again. The bundled TRINA · HANDS WebM can demonstrate live tracking, but its current encoding is not accepted by the offline renderer.

A camera permission prompt belongs to the browser. If you would rather work from a clip, use your own uploaded footage; you do not need to turn on a camera to edit it.

How do you add tracking lines without covering the hands?

Add TRACK and choose HANDS or FACE + HANDS. TRACK draws its own lines, boxes and markers; HAND FRAME supplies the colored window. Lower the tracking looks’ opacity so the lines explain the gesture instead of competing with it.

  1. Keep the same source and HAND FRAME effect, then add TRACK through ADD AN EFFECT.
  2. Choose HANDS for hand landmarks, or FACE + HANDS to include the face.
  3. Try PLEXUS for connected points or CONSTELLATION for a skeleton and markers.
  4. Reduce PLEXUS OPACITY, CONSTELLATION OPACITY and any BOXES OPACITY until the window remains the main subject.
  5. Move your hands slowly, then faster, and compare the tracking response before adding another effect.
  6. Save a video comparison with RENDER → RENDER VIDEO → SAVE VIDEO in MP4 or WebM for an uploaded source; use RECORD for live capture.
A face mask illustrates the same order rule: MASK limits effects below it to the selected area.

How do you put several effects inside the hand window?

Use MASK when you want a custom stack inside the tracked shape. Choose SHAPE: HANDS and AREA: INSIDE, then put the effects you want confined below MASK. Effects above MASK still cover the full picture. Order is part of the result, so build this stack one pass at a time.

  1. Add MASK, choose SHAPE: HANDS, and set AREA: INSIDE.
  2. Add GRADIENT MAP, then move it below MASK with its reorder handle.
  3. Choose POP in GRADIENT MAP for a strong color treatment.
  4. Add POSTERIZE for fewer tonal steps, or ASCII for text texture, keeping them below MASK.
  5. Keep ASCII’s MIX low at first, and compare AREA: INSIDE with OUTSIDE to understand which region you are treating.
  6. Finish the uploaded-video version through RENDER → RENDER VIDEO → SAVE VIDEO as MP4 or WebM; capture a live version with RECORD.

Choose the right capture path

RENDER can preserve tracking over an uploaded video. A live camera or screen exists only while you capture it, so use RECORD. A shader layer is live-only; remove it before rendering an uploaded-video composition.

How do you export the window for another editor?

For a separate compositing pass, open MASK → ADVANCED and choose SOLID FILL or MATTE. SOLID FILL provides a key color; MATTE provides white inside the selected area and black outside. These are color or grayscale masks, not a promise of an alpha channel.

Set FILL OPACITY to 1 for a solid key, leave SURFACE GUIDES: OFF for a clean pass, and adjust GROW and SOFT EDGE for the boundary. The FX Rack guide explains the output choices. Keep replacement music and vertical editing separate from the native effect recipe: neither is created merely by switching on HAND FRAME.

Can the tracked video become a Studio backdrop?

Yes, if you save the finished treatment as MP4 / H.264. Open Studio's IMAGE/VIDEO backdrop and use UPLOAD VIDEO to place that file behind a music composition. Follow Studio's Look guide and export guide. The imported video contains the rendered tracking treatment; its hands and masks are no longer separately editable effects. WebM can preview as a backdrop but does not export from Studio, so choose MP4 for this handoff.

What should you try next?

Make one short test with both hands visible from start to finish, then play back the finished download. Look for the window closing correctly when a hand leaves, tracking lines remaining readable, and the treatment staying inside the intended area.

Open BeamTracer Performer, follow the full FX Rack reference, or learn how to export visualizer video. For music-driven movement beyond tracking, try the Winamp-style modulation recipe.
