How Do I Export an Oscilloscope Video with a Transparent Background?
To export a transparent oscilloscope video in BeamTracer OSC-1, lower Background Opacity to 0% under BEAM PROPERTIES, start your source, then choose EXPORT → VIDEO → RECORD LIVE INPUT. In a supported browser, OSC-1 records a WebM with transparency. Place the recording over other footage in an editor that supports WebM alpha.
Hi, I'm Trina with BeamTracer.com. The black screen around a scope trace is useful while you work, but you may want the trace floating over a title or video. The checkerboard shows the area that will be transparent.
This silent walkthrough shows the app's checkerboard preview. The checkerboard is part of the walkthrough picture; the native transparent download contains the trace and its glow.
How do I remove the background without losing the trace?
Set Background Opacity to 0% in the right-hand BEAM PROPERTIES panel. The screen, tube face and graticule fade away while the trace and glow remain. You can leave some background visible with an intermediate value, but use zero when you want a clear overlay.
This example starts in CREATOR → GENERATORS → LISSAJOUS with Complex 3:4. BEAM EFFECTS → ROTATE turns the figure so you can see the motion against the checkerboard. Rotation is optional; your source can be another generated shape, an audio file or a live input supported by OSC-1.
With Background Opacity at 100%, the scope keeps its screen behind the moving trace. Compare that with the checkerboard example above.
Keep the beam visible
Change Background Opacity rather than turning down the trace's Intensity. Background Opacity controls the screen behind the drawing; lowering Intensity makes the drawing fainter.
Which export option saves the transparency?
Use RECORD LIVE INPUT in the VIDEO tab. The dialog reports whether your browser can save transparency before you start. The native recording for this article was made in desktop Chrome and saved a 1920 × 1080 WebM with a transparent background and source audio.
- Open OSC-1, select a source, and start playback.
- Expand BEAM PROPERTIES and set Background Opacity to 0%.
- Open EXPORT and choose VIDEO.
- Select SHAPE and RESOLUTION, then read the transparency notice.
- Choose RECORD LIVE INPUT and let the drawing run for your take.
- Open EXPORT again and press STOP RECORDING to download the WebM file.
The notice belongs to the selected export path. Read it before recording, when you change browsers.
Live recording follows the running display in real time. Start the source before you record and leave enough time at both ends to trim the take in your editor. The OSC-1 export guide explains the frame shapes, resolution choices and sound behavior.
Why does RENDER VIDEO still have a black background?
OSC-1's RENDER VIDEO path keeps a black background. MP4 H.264 does not store the transparency used here, and selecting WebM in that frame-by-frame renderer does not enable alpha export. Use the live recording path when your finished file needs a transparent background.
Check the export path
A checkerboard in the workspace does not make every export transparent. Confirm that the VIDEO tab says the live recording will save transparency, then choose RECORD LIVE INPUT.
How do I check the overlay in my editor?
Place the downloaded WebM above a visibly different background in an editor that can read WebM transparency. Scrub through the take and inspect the space around the trace and its softer glow. A black rectangle can mean the application is not reading alpha, or that the file came from the opaque render path.
Keep the original WebM while you test. Converting it to an ordinary H.264 MP4 removes the transparency. If your editor needs another alpha-capable format, use a conversion workflow that explicitly preserves alpha and check the converted result over a background too.
These article clips are silent for browsing; a native OSC-1 recording may include source sound. Decide whether you need that sound in the final composition. Export resolution, watermarks and allowances follow your plan.
